What Is qigong?

History

Qigong is an ancient practice used by the Chinese for over 5,000 years.  It combines meditative practices and a system or series of physical movements and is the basic exercise system within Chinese medicine. Qigong exercises are designed to help you preserve your Jing (the deep foundational energy reserves of the body) to strengthen and balance the flow of Qi (the Chinese term for life energy), and enlighten your Shen (the spiritual element of a person’s psyche).  Qigong’s dynamic exercises and meditations have Yin and Yang aspects: The Yin is about ‘being’; the Yang is about ‘doing’. These practices are particularly effective for supporting the immune system.

Chinese medicine uses qigong exercises to maintain health, prevent illness, and extend longevity. This is because it is a powerful tool for maintaining and restoring harmony to the organ systems, essential substances, and energy channels of the body.

Why Learn qigong?

Beside the wellbeing and health benefits of qigong, qigong is also used for non-medical purposes for pursuing enlightenment. Each technique opens a different aspect of your higher mind whereby new neuropathways to the brain are opened and eventually remain open and it is also one way to help us to return to spirit.

When we come into the world we come out of spirit to learn to walk and talk and to learn to get ourselves into our physical selves (our senses)  This takes quite a while to master and then we need to re-learn to get back into our spirit again.  Qigong helps us to re-connect with spirit and to blend again with any project or thing you are undertaking.  We are stretching and bending the mind, to take it out of thinking and the physical world and allowing it to expand again.  We only use 3-5% of our brain capacity.  Qigong can assist us to learn to use 35-40% more of it.  We can connect more to the wisdom mind to do this.

Practicing qigong techniques help us move our energy progressively higher from the heart to the throat, to the third eye (different aspects of the higher mind)  until eventually your soul qualities begin to emerge.
